Email from Annice Jacoby, August 27, 2007
My cousin forwarded me a Buffalo
Colony notice about my Uncle and cousin's recent
visit. I was heartened
to see the family link to Jacoby's renewed. A bit of a correction,
the man who briefly owned the colony after my grandfather was Al Broser.
He took over when my grandfather's health and vigor and the appeal
of the Catskills simultaneously declined. My family held the mortgage,
and Broser, as he always seemed to be called in family
shorthand, let the place decline and defaulted.
My brother
managed the place for a couple of seasons and then my father
and uncle, both weary of the responsibility and busy with their demanding
work, sold it to what has become the Buffalo Colony. My
heart was heavy, my arguments to hold it forever had no
weight. With the privilege of being the oldest grandchild
whose entire childhood spans the flourishing of the colony,
I seem to carry primary responsibility for the family's
nostalgia and longing for the extraordinary pleasure and
energy generated over the years.
Decades later I accidently
saw the New York Times article about the revival of colonies in
the Catskills. I sent this letter to the Times. I also have
many photos, memoribilia like a baby size Jacoby's T shirt, and
a story or two. I attach one of the stories.
